Untitled

charcoal and powdered graphite on paper
15X11 in  and 11X15 in

A number of years ago I saw a show of Chuck Holtzman’s drawings. From his work I realized that drawing is all about making marks on a two-dimensional surface. Marks can be made by addition or subtraction, scratching, tearing or using intermediate media to transfer the marks.

These drawings are an exploration of the possible ways of marking with lines using charcoal and powdered graphite. Each mark participates in a conversation with its neighbors, changing the commentary of the next mark. We seem to be eavesdropping on the conversation told in tongues.
